Two voices with rowing history: Juliane Möcklinghoff and Jonas Schützeberg commentate in Allermöhe

A regatta thrives on many things: strong races, good organization, fair conditions, committed clubs, focused athletes – and people who are able to assess what is happening on the course.

At our regatta in Allermöhe, we had two commentators at the microphone, Juliane Möcklinghoff and Jonas Schützeberg, who have exactly that: Media experience, sporting expertise and their own history in rowing.

Juliane Möcklinghoff is known to many from the NDR and ARD environment. She works as a journalist, presenter and filmmaker, including in the sports sector. However, her closeness to rowing does not only come from reporting. She herself was a competitive athlete, multiple German champion, national league champion and runner-up in the student world championships. Anyone who has been in a boat for so long looks at a race differently: at rhythm, technique, body language, race organization and the moments when a team mobilizes everything once again.

Jonas Schützeberg also combines both worlds. As a sports journalist, he works for rbb and in the sports show environment. He was previously an internationally successful lightweight rower himself, including world champion in the lightweight eight. He later remained involved in rowing as a coach and is now Chairman of Sport at the Berlin Rowing Club. So he not only knows the athlete’s perspective, but also that of the coach and club manager.

This mixture was clearly audible during the regatta weekend. Juliane Möcklinghoff and Jonas Schützeberg not only commented on which boat was currently in the lead. They explained what was happening on the course: Why a race can suddenly tip over. How you can tell if a boat is running smoothly. Why a seemingly small technical error can be decisive in the final sprint. And why everything remains open right up to the finish line, especially for juniors.

That’s what makes a junior regatta special. Ambition, development, experience and nervousness come together directly in junior competitive sport. Some athletes are already very experienced, while others gain important competition experience. This results in races that are sometimes surprising, sometimes dramatic and often very instructive.

For viewers, good commentary is therefore more than just accompaniment. It opens their eyes to what is not immediately visible. It makes it clear why an attack at 1,000 meters is courageous, why a clean final sprint is not a matter of course and why a race is only over when the bow has reached the finish line.

You could also tell that Juliane and Jonas have known each other from rowing for many years. The commentary was professional, attentive and at the same time relaxed. They classified, explained, observed – and even smiled in the right places. This is exactly the right mix for a regatta that is challenging in sporting terms and yet thrives on the special atmosphere of rowing.

We are delighted that Juliane Möcklinghoff and Jonas Schützeberg commented on our regatta in Allermöhe. Two voices that not only describe the sport of rowing, but know it.

Thank you for your time, your view of the races and your enjoyment of rowing.
