Hamburg Youth Rowing

Where young talent thrives and team spirit matters.

Hello!

We are Hamburg Youth Rowing, the state organization for the U15 age group in Hamburg.

The

National Competition

The National Competition is the central season highlight for our young female athletes aged 12 to 14. In this nationwide comparison, the most talented female rowers from all over Germany compete against each other.

Each federal state can send up to two boats in the respective boat and age categories. The qualification is based on the results of the State Championship – on this basis, we nominate the strongest boats for the Hamburg team.

For optimal preparation for the National Competition, we organize an intensive training weekend where the nominated athletes are specifically prepared for the season’s highlight under professional conditions.

Our aim is to optimally prepare the Hamburg team for the National Competition, both organizationally and athletically.

Our

Courses

To offer our young athletes attractive and development-promoting opportunities outside the regatta season, we organize several themed courses annually.

A special highlight is the cross-country skiing course in Oberhof, which takes place amidst an impressive and professional winter sports backdrop. In addition to fitness training, the focus here is on team spirit and cross-sport experiences.

The technical training course in Allermöhe traditionally marks the start of season preparation. With the help of video analyses and initial load comparisons in direct interaction, we provide targeted impulses for technical development on the water.

The program is complemented by an athletics and education weekend in Ratzeburg, which serves the holistic development of our children. In addition to various sports, the focus here is on changing theoretical topics, which are conveyed by external experts in practical lectures.

With these courses, we specifically create opportunities for athletic and personal development – beyond regatta sports.

The

Regattas

The State Championship as a qualification regatta for the National Competition is just one of several regattas that we regularly co-organize and supervise.

A special highlight for the season finale is the Boys’ and Girls’ Regatta as part of the North German Championships in autumn, which is firmly assigned to our area of responsibility.

Successful performance of Hamburg Youth Rowing at the National Competition 2025 – 3rd place in the overall ranking

Hamburg Youth Rowing once again demonstrated its team spirit, ambition, and talent at the 2025 National Competition in Munich-Oberschleißheim. From June 26 to 29, everything was on the line in Munich-Oberschleißheim – and our young Hamburg rowers once again showed what they are made of. In the end, they secured a strong 3rd place in the overall ranking – behind Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia.

The journey began on Thursday: With great anticipation and a good dose of nervousness, the Hamburg boats set off south. Upon arrival at the historic 1972 Olympic course, the atmosphere was immediately great – despite a brief scare: a sudden storm caused some unrest. But after a few strong gusts of wind and rain showers, the scare was over. After that, things continued as planned: unloading boats, rigging up, first training sessions on the course. The tension was palpable – everyone knew: now it’s really starting!

On Friday, the 3,000-meter long-distance race was on the agenda. And here our Hamburg crews showed what they are capable of: With endurance, technique, and tactical acumen, many boats secured top positions. This was rewarded with an excellent 3rd place in the long-distance state ranking – a strong start to the competition weekend!

Saturday then saw the General Sports Competition (ASW) – the day for sprint, jump, agility, and team tasks. A real challenge, especially with the high temperatures: The sun was scorching, many struggled with the heat and had to really mobilize all their strength again. Despite great effort, it was unfortunately only enough for 11th place in the ASW ranking. Of course, there was initial disappointment – but our team showed team spirit: Together, they analyzed, motivated, and quickly refocused.

Sunday then brought the showdown on the 1,000-meter short-distance course – and Hamburg was fully back in action! In many races, our boats delivered strong performances: Fast starts, great fighting spirit, and an extra dose of motivation paid off. In the end, they once again secured 3rd place in the daily ranking – a great finish.

With two strong race days and an overall cohesive team performance, they deservedly secured 3rd place in the overall ranking of the National Competition. A great success that demonstrates the strength of youth development in Hamburg’s rowing clubs and how much team spirit and dedication pay off.

Beyond the sporting successes, what remains most is the memory of a great weekend with much cohesion, mutual support, and plenty of fun – even outside of the competitions. A big thank you goes to all coaches, supervisors, helpers, and parents who so wonderfully supported the team before, during, and after the competition. With these experiences and memories, Hamburg Youth Rowing is already looking motivated towards 2026 – because one thing is certain: After the National Competition is before the National Competition!
