Rowing in Germany began in Hamburg, and from the very start, Hamburg’s rowers have been pioneers in their sport!

The Hamburg Rowing Club (DHRC) is founded as the first German rowing club, modeled after the English rowing teams in Hamburg.

…the founding of the AAC (Allgemeiner Alster-Club). The AAC is the first German regatta club.
1845
Following a design competition, the Allgemeiner Alster-Club adopts its own coat of arms.
21.06.1864
The AAC defines the amateur clause: “Amateurs” are “decent people who row for pleasure.”
1868
Founding of the North German Regatta Association (NRV) by Germania, La Favorite, and RC Allemannia to promote water sports.
1878
Introduction of the 2,000-meter regatta course without a turning buoy, still valid today, in Hamburg.
1879/80
The NRV builds the first boathouse in Hamburg at Ferdinandstor to house racing boats.
1896
Founding of the North German Rowers’ Association (NRB) by clubs whose members do not comply with the DRV’s amateur regulations.
1900
Victory of Germania’s coxed four at the first Olympic rowing competitions in Paris.
1968
Two Hamburgers (Horst Meyer, Dirk Schreyer, both DHuGRC) are part of Karl Adam’s legendary gold eight in Mexico!
1980
Merger of AAC and NRB to form the AAC/NRB Hamburg State Rowing Association.
1999
The AAC/NRB hosts the Nations Cup (U23 World Championships) in Hamburg-Allermöhe (see Regattas).
2004
The AAC/NRB hosts the FISA World Masters Regatta (World Championships for Masters Rowers) in Hamburg-Allermöhe, with over 4000 participants, making it the largest regatta ever held.
2009
Inauguration of the second construction phase of the State Performance Center.
2011
The AAC/NRB hosts the World Cup for the first time. A new finish tower is built for this, and the course is expanded from six to eight lanes.
2014
The U19 Junior World Championships take place in Allermöhe before a home crowd. With 7 gold and two silver medals, two fourth places, and one fifth and one sixth place each, the DRV concludes the U19 World Championships as the most successful association.
2015
The Hamburg State Rowing Association wins the German Youth Cup in Cologne for the third consecutive time, as the best state association.
2019
The AAC/NRB celebrates 175 years of regatta tradition in Hamburg and, together with the DRV and Allgemeiner Hochschulsport (adh), simultaneously hosts German Championships for large boats, students, para-rowers, and masters, with approximately 800 participating boats.
