Waterways
Current information on Hamburg's waterways.
Hamburg’s rowing area is extensive. Rowing takes place on the Alster and its side canals, on the Bille, Dove Elbe, Norderelbe and Süderelbe, in Wilhelmsburg on the Aßmannkanal, in the Port of Hamburg and Harburg Inland Port, as well as on the Lower Elbe. You can find out where our clubs and associations are located and how to contact them here.
In addition to the contact persons in our clubs and associations, our touring rowing warden will also gladly give you tips for tours through our beautiful Hanseatic city.

Current Notices and Information
The Reiherstieg Lock is expected to be closed until the end of 2027 due to the new construction of the lock and the overlying road bridges.
There is no portage option!
The Süderelbe area can be navigated as follows:
In an easterly direction via Norderelbe / Bunthäuser Spitze
In a northerly / westerly direction via Reiherstieg / Rethe / Köhlbrand or Reiherstieg / Roßkanal / Köhlbrand
These are tidal waters.
Due to increased traffic, the following rules apply to lock passages for recreational boating:
– At every full hour, locking takes place in the direction of the Elbe
– At every half hour, locking takes place in the direction of the Bille
Therefore, telephone inquiries about whether or when a lock passage will be carried out can be avoided in the future.
The on-site operating personnel provide no information about whether a lock passage is still possible at a certain water level.
The Tiefstack Lock has a sill at -2.50 mNHN.
Current water levels are also available via the automatic telephone announcement of the St. Pauli gauge at Tel.: 040 428 47 3285 or via the internet and numerous smartphone apps. It is therefore kindly requested to use these options and plan an outing accordingly in advance.
Berths for houseboats have been created in the area of the flood basin. More are to follow in the western Mittelkanal and on the northern edge of the Bille basin (Rückerskanal opposite the Biller RC).
The Kehrwiederfleet is navigable upstream, as are the Wandrahmsfleet and Holländischbrookfleet.
The Ericusgraben is open, so you can travel from the Magdeburger Hafen via the Oberbaumbrücke into the Zollkanal.
The pier at the Maritime Museum is a public pier and can also be used by sports boats, provided it is not being used by the Museums-Circle-Line.
The land side is dilapidated and not lowered for sports boats. The HPA advises against its use.
You can find the dates for sailing regattas on the Alster here.
Restrictions may occur during regattas.
