The Hamburg Parliament discussed the city’s potential bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Both opportunities and critical aspects of the project were discussed.
Representatives of the government factions emphasized the potential impetus for sport, infrastructure and international perception of Hamburg. At the same time, it was emphasized that a bid could only be made on the basis of clear framework conditions and with the broad support of the population.
Among other things, the opposition pointed to financial risks, unanswered questions regarding implementation and experiences from previous Olympic bids. The importance of the upcoming referendum was also emphasized in the debate.
A decision on a possible application is therefore still open and closely tied to the vote of the people of Hamburg.
