Greater Safety on the Outer Alster: Buoy Line Approved Through 2030
Good news for rowing on the Außenalster: The AAC/NRB Hamburg State Rowing Association’s row of safety buoys can continue to be deployed in the coming years. The relevant authority has granted the necessary permits under maritime traffic regulations and water law through 2030.
This allows for the placement of twelve buoys on the Outer Alster each year from March 15 to November 15. Their primary purpose is to help rowers and other users of the waterway navigate more easily and to contribute to orderly and safe traffic flow.
Clear Navigation on the Water
The buoys mark a guide line for traffic on the Outer Alster. Rowers from the State Rowing Association must continue to follow the rule of keeping to the right: provided traffic conditions permit, they should row in close proximity to the row of buoys. The line thus helps separate northbound and southbound traffic.
Especially on a heavily used body of water like the Outer Alster, clearly marked navigation aids provide additional guidance—both for training activities and for ensuring harmonious coexistence among different water sports.
Safety also means responsibility
The permit is subject to clear conditions. The buoys must be safe for navigation at all times; their positions are regularly checked and corrected as necessary. In addition, specified safety distances must be maintained from dock facilities, shallow-water zones, water police facilities, water sports clubs, and other facilities.
Any incidents that may occur in the immediate vicinity of the buoy line are also documented and evaluated. This ensures that the measure is not static but is continuously reviewed from a safety perspective.
Responsibility for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the buoy chain rotates annually among the Hamburg Alster clubs and associations. This year, we are grateful that Allemannia took on the installation and, at the same time, replaced and marked all the buoys. With that in mind, we would like to thank the RC Allemannia v.1866!
For the AAC/NRB Hamburg State Rowing Association, the permit valid through 2030 is a key element in ensuring that rowing activities on the Außenalster are conducted safely, responsibly, and in harmony with all other users of the waterway.
