Hamburg School Rowing Championship
Under brilliant sunshine and summer temperatures, rowing-enthusiastic students from 14 participating schools gathered again with their coaches at the Außenalster this year. Ruder-Club Favorite Hammonia (Fari) and Hamburger und Germania Ruder Club (Club) kindly provided jetties and club premises, ensuring a relatively smooth process despite this year’s large registration field of 122 boats and a total of 630 seats.
In the coxed quad scull for age groups 2006-2008, the boys from Matthias-Claudius-Gymnasium rowed across the finish line ahead of Wilhelm-Gymnasium, securing their ticket to Berlin. The competing boats from Sophie-Barat-Schule and Emilie-Wüstenfeld-Gymnasium were unlucky – both suffered a broken oar and ultimately could only complete the course with three active rowers each.
In the gig quad scull, the team from Wilhelm-Gymnasium narrowly prevailed against the quad from Matthias-Claudius Gymnasium in a six-boat field and will thus represent Hamburg in Berlin. The boys’ sweep-oar gig quad from Matthias-Claudius Gymnasium, of the same age, had it easy again this year. Without any opposing entries, they secured their qualification for Berlin.
In the girls’ same age group, the Wichern-Schule boat won the race in the racing quad scull. The crew from Mathias-Claudius-Gymnasium prevailed in the gig quad scull, and these boats will thus compete in Berlin.
In the eight, there was only one entry from Heilwig-Gymnasium, so this boat will represent Hamburg in Berlin. The eight-person crew from Stadtteilschule Alter Teichweg, age group 2006 and older, clearly prevailed against the Eimsbüttler Modell boat, thus qualifying to compete in the DRJ School Eight Cup in Berlin, which will be held as part of the national final.
