In the run-up to Hamburg’s possible bid for the Summer Olympics, the city is relying on the support of well-known sports personalities. Hamburg’s popular sports clubs are also to take part in the information campaign until the referendum in May.

Hamburg’s Olympic bid continues to be the subject of controversial debate. In an #NDRfragt survey in October 2025, a majority of participants spoke out against the project. The Senate, sports clubs and renowned athletes now want to actively accompany and support the project.

Supporters include Olympic beach volleyball champion Laura Ludwig, para-canoeist Edina Müller, tennis player Eva Lys and former national soccer player and HSV legend Horst Hrubesch. The aim of the campaign is to provide comprehensive information about the current bid concept and to clarify existing reservations. Sports Senator Andy Grote emphasized that many reservations were based on earlier Olympic concepts that were not comparable with today’s plans.

Numerous sports clubs are also planning information events in the run-up to the referendum. Events in public spaces are planned, for example in Bergedorf and Allermöhe. The referendum is scheduled for May 31. In this context, Sports Senator Grote referred to the more than 600,000 members of Hamburg’s sports clubs and their potential significance for the outcome of the referendum.
