For some members of this year’s BW team, the trip also took them abroad. As in previous years, 16 children from Hamburg and 8 children from Schleswig-Holstein traveled by train to Macon, France.
During this year’s German-French exchange for the U15 age group, the program included not only learning to row in eights and fours but also a linguistic and cultural exchange with the French participants. In addition to various games, the participants sampled specialties from both countries and learned about cultural differences.
The highlight of the week was always the sessions with the multinational eight-person crews and the mixed crews. It was also a new experience for the coaches to exchange ideas with the French coach from the motorboat and find the right words for the team.
At the end of the week, a final competition was held among the various eight-person crews. In this event, one girls’ eight, one boys’ eight, and one mixed eight from each nation competed in the 1,000-meter and 500-meter races. Afterward, the cross-national girls’ eights, boys’ eights, and mixed eights also took to the water.
For everyone involved, it was a week full of new experiences, offering many new insights into sweep rowing, French culture, and what they can expect in the coming years.
