Off to the South
In no particular order, we introduce you to the Hamburg rowing clubs.
You’ve known the most prominent member of this club since the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette: Judith Anlauf.
Now get to know the club in the south of Hamburg, the RC Süderelbe.
Since this is the ideal opportunity, it’s time to clear up a common misconception: Harburg, and thus the RC Süderelbe, are not far away! The S-Bahn only takes 13 minutes from the main station to Harburg. Rowers are usually even quicker to reach RC Süderelbe than Hamburg-Allermöhe. And with that, we would like to invite all interested fellow rowers to visit our club with its unique rowing area and spacious boathouse.
“Can you even row properly on the Elbe?”
Absolutely! What’s unique about our area is that we can practice our sport in almost any weather and that we don’t have to share our rowing waters with masses of sailors, canoeists, stand-up paddlers, or other water sports enthusiasts. Here, you can row undisturbed in summer and winter, without having to look around every few strokes.
“And where do you row here?”
RC Süderelbe has a unique location, allowing you to row upstream on the Elbe into nature and enjoy the scenery. Passing under the motorway bridge, you enter the Heuckenlock nature reserve, until you can observe at Bunthäuser Spitze how the Elbe divides into the Norderelbe and Süderelbe. Downstream on the Elbe, you row past the seaports, the Moorburg power plant, and under the Kattwyk Bridge, until you can finally marvel at the large container ships at Terminal Altenwerder and the Köhlbrand Bridge. Here, the bustling activity of the port industry beckons.
But at RC Süderelbe, you don’t have to row on the Elbe. After just one kilometer downstream on the Elbe, the Reiherstieg lock leads into the sheltered harbor basin, and past inland and heavy-lift vessels, you reach the Reiherstieg with a unique view of the Elbphilharmonie. If you want to visit your friends on the Alster, you can continue rowing here via the Norderelbe and through the Speicherstadt, finally passing the lock to the Binnenalster.
In addition to these routes, there are many other ways to make your rowing experience diverse.
“That sounds pretty good. So, where can you find us?”
The boathouse of RC Süderelbe is located together with other water sports clubs on Pionierinsel in the nature reserve behind the Elbe dike. With us, you not only have a unique view of the Elbe but also spacious green areas outdoors that invite you to relax in summer. Furthermore, we have six boat halls with sufficient storage space, so all boats can be easily accessed. On the upper floor of the building, a cozy club room, as well as a weight room, gymnastics hall, and workshops, await.
“Who can join us?”
RC Süderelbe is the only rowing club in Harburg and thus the southernmost rowing club in Hamburg. We engage in both recreational and touring rowing, as well as competitive sports. Everyone is welcome here, and we offer groups for children and teenagers, students, and adults.
“What else do you offer besides regular training?”
We organize cross-divisional excursions and touring trips. During the season, competitive athletes attend numerous regattas – depending on their performance level – up to international competitions and world championships. Our student group has already made a name for itself at extraordinary events such as the 210 km Elfsteden Roeimarathon or the Rhine Marathon. And those who no longer wish to get into a boat themselves can join either the table tennis group or our workshop team. Last but not least, the summer festival and other events contribute to our club life being valued across all generations.
“Who should I contact if I have questions? Where can I get more information?”
If you have questions, please send us a message via our contact form or by email to info@rc-suederelbe.de. Further information, photos, and activities of RC Süderelbe can be found on our website , on Facebook and Twitter @RCS1892.
