Hamburg Women Rowers of 1925

Women can do it themselves...
The Hamburg Women’s Rowing Club was founded in 1925 under the patronage of the AAC as a women’s rowing squad, because at that time the four Alster clubs did not want to admit women. Since then, the club has thrived – even through difficult times – and is an integral part of the Hamburg rowing scene.

Our boathouse is located in Eppendorf in an idyllic spot on the Isebek Canal, easily accessible by subway (Kellinghusenstrasse). It still exudes a bit of the charm of the 50s: a simple, flat wooden building, but with character! Repeatedly renovated, altered, and expanded, it offers members everything they need to pursue our beautiful sport and foster camaraderie. Next to the clubhouse is our large boat shed, currently housing 56 boats for competitive and recreational rowing, from skiffs to racing eights, from trimmis to seaworthy touring rowing boats. Half of our fleet was financed through member donations. As far as possible, we maintain our fleet ourselves and also carry out minor repairs.

The photo gallery from recent years can be found here.

Our membership has been just under 400 for years, with ages ranging from 12 to 96. So there definitely seems to be a need for a women-only rowing club! If you ask members about the advantages, the answers mostly lean towards: “We also want to be among ourselves sometimes; and: the interaction among us is simply ‘more peaceful’.” There also seems to be no interest in admitting men. Because everything functions as it should in a well-organized club.

Regarding sports activities: Despite impressive successes in the past, there is currently no active competitive sports group; however, numerous younger members are very active in the second competitive level and participate in many recreational sports regattas.

The majority of members row in their free time on the surrounding waters, i.e., on the Alster and the canals. Organization is done through fixed groups, which form according to interest, skill, and available time. A pleasingly large number of members from various age groups participate in touring rowing.

Contact persons for all these groups can be found on our homepage.

Our membership fees (see our homepage) are quite moderate compared to other Alster clubs, because we handle many tasks ourselves.

If you’d like to take a closer look at all of this, simply come by Isekai 11a in the evening from 5:30 PM.
