Successful performance by the Hamburg Youth Rowing Team at the 2025 National Competition—3rd place in the overall standings
At the 2025 National Competition in Munich-Oberschleißheim, Hamburg’s junior rowers once again demonstrated just how much team spirit, ambition, and talent they possess. From June 26 to 29, everything was on the line in Munich-Oberschleißheim—and our young rowers from Hamburg once again showed what they’re made of. In the end, they secured a strong third place in the overall standings —behind Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia.
The trip began as early as Thursday: Filled with anticipation and a fair amount of nervousness, the Hamburg boats set off southward. Upon arriving at the historic 1972 Olympic course, the mood was immediately great—despite a brief moment of panic: a sudden storm caused a brief flurry of activity. But after a few strong gusts of wind and rain showers, the scare was over before you knew it. After that, things continued as planned: unloading the boats, rigging them up, and holding the first training sessions on the course. The excitement was palpable—everyone knew: Now it’s really getting started!
On Friday, the 3,000-meter long-distance race was on the schedule. And here, our Hamburg crews showed what they’re capable of: With endurance, technique, and tactical acumen, many boats fought their way to the top spots. This was rewarded with an outstanding 3rd place in the long-distance state rankings —a strong start to the competition weekend!
Then on Saturday came the General Sports Competition (ASW) —the day for sprints, jumps, agility, and team challenges. It was a real challenge, especially with the high temperatures: The sun was beating down hard, many struggled with the heat, and had to really dig deep to muster all their strength. Despite their tremendous effort, we unfortunately only managed to finish in 11th place in the ASW standings. Of course, there was some disappointment at first—but our team showed true team spirit: Together, we analyzed our performance, motivated one another, and quickly set our sights on the future again.
On Sunday, the showdown on the 1,000-meter sprint course took place—and Hamburg was back in full force! Our boats delivered strong performances in many races: fast starts, plenty of fighting spirit, and an extra dose of motivation paid off. In the end, we once again finished in 3rd place in the daily standings —a great way to wrap things up.
With two strong race days and an overall cohesive team performance, they deservedly secured 3rd place in the overall ranking of the National Competition. A great success that demonstrates the strength of youth development in Hamburg’s rowing clubs and how much team spirit and dedication pay off.
Beyond the athletic achievements, what stands out most is the memory of a wonderful weekend filled with team spirit, mutual support, and lots of fun—even outside of the competitions. A big thank you goes out to all the coaches, supervisors, volunteers, and parents who provided such wonderful support to the team before, during, and after the competition. Armed with these experiences and memories, the Hamburg Youth Rowing Team is already looking forward to 2026 with renewed motivation—because one thing is certain: After the national competition is before the national competition!
